Share YOUR Passion

Are you passionate about working with children, specifically children ages 5-12?  If so, the Y could use your help!

Our summer day camp program will serve approximately 150 youth this summer, many of whom come from at-risk environments. We are actively searching for volunteers who have a passion and skill in five particular areas (see below), who can help these children explore and develop their own passions.

Being a volunteer won’t only benefit the children and community you serve, it will also benefit you. Did you know that when you volunteer it will make you feel healthier and happier. According to Help Guide, on mental health and wellness, there are four ways that volunteerism will benefit you:

  1. Volunteering connects you to others
  2. Volunteering is good for your mind and body
  3. Volunteering can advance your career
  4. Volunteering brings fun and fulfillment to your life

In addition, when we engage in our communities through behaviors such as volunteering, we build ties, relationships, and bonds of trust with others. These activities help us build and strengthen our social networks and strengthen our communities by creating social capital.

This blog from the Heart of Illinois United Way, says that volunteers “…build their community’s social capital by working together with their neighbors and becoming more aware and understanding of community needs.”

Here at the Y, we are looking for the volunteers to serve in each of the following areas, to help kids learn and grow:

  1. Dance
  2. Photography
  3. Web-design and/or Coding
  4. Building & Trades (including Construction, Plumbing, Electrical, etc…)
  5. Engineering

If you have an interest in serving in any of these capacities, for any amount of time this summer, please contact Paul Larson, our Senior Program Director.
