October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness month and today we are shedding some light on how nutrition can play a role in decreasing your risk.

1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer at some point in her lifetime. With statistics like these it is important for everyone, not only women, to be proactive about their health! Early detection is very important, and this is why regular screening is key.

For our diets, the best way to keep disease at bay and reduce cancer risks is to follow a healthy diet. This includes increasing the amount of whole fruits and vegetables we consume, choosing mostly whole grains, limiting alcohol consumption, focus on unsaturated fats, and limit intake of processed meats and other processed foods.

An active lifestyle is also an important part of disease prevention, so be sure to use your YMCA membership to the full extent!
