At the Greater Peoria Family YMCA, we believe safety is paramount. Our Safety Academy offers vital training sessions that empower individuals with lifesaving skills. Join our upcoming courses, taught by certified American Red Cross instructors, to gain certifications in Adult and Pediatric First Aid, CPR, and AED. These programs are open to YMCA staff and the community, giving everyone the opportunity to be prepared in emergencies.

Adult & Pediatric First Aid, CPR, AED (Blended) Ages 15+
- Location: Greater Peoria Family YMCA
- Description: The American Red Cross First Aid/CPR/AED program provides participants with the knowledge and skills they need to
- recognize and respond appropriately to cardiac, breathing and first aid emergencies.
- This program teaches participants the knowledge and skills needed to give immediate care to an injured or ill person and to decide whether advanced medical care is needed. This program offers certification in first aid, CPR and AED to meet the various training needs of all participants.
- THIS IS A BLENDED COURSE. ONLINE PRE-WORK MAY TAKE UP TO 3 HOURS TO COMPLETE. Blended training courses take place virtually and in-person. Once you have registered for the course, you will be sent an email from “Salesforce Automation” – may take up to 24 hours. The email will provide information and access to the online learning. Successful completion of the online learning is required prior to attending the in-person part of the course.

Advanced Babysitter’s Training (Pediatric First Aid & CPR included) Ages 13+
- Location: Greater Peoria Family YMCA
- Description: The primary purpose of the American Red Cross Babysitter’s Training course is to provide youth who are planning to babysit with the knowledge and skills necessary to safely and responsibly give care for children and infants. This training will help participants to develop leadership skills; learn how to develop a babysitting business, keep themselves and others safe and help children behave; and learn about basic child care and basic first aid. This class will provide participants to achieve their American Red Cross Pediatric First Aid & CPR certificate.

OFFERED IN THE SUMMER ONLY
Lifeguarding FULL Course (3-or5-DayBlendedCourse)
Ages15+|$250M/$300NM
- Location: Greater Peoria Family YMCA
- Description: The Lifeguarding course provides participants the knowledge and skills to prevent recognize and respond to aquatic emergencies in both shallow water (less than 7 feet) and deeper water (7 feet or more) and to provide professional-level care for breathing and cardiac emergencies injuries and sudden illnesses until EMS personnel take over. This class is taught in a blended learning format and the assigned online portion(s) (accessed via mobile desktop or tablet) must be completed prior to each instructor-led session. Participants who successfully complete this course receive an American Red Cross certificate for Lifeguarding (including deep water) with CPR/AED for Professional Rescuers and First Aid valid for 2 years. Prerequisites: 1. Minimum age: 15 years; 2. Complete a swim- tread-swim sequence: Jump into the water submerge resurface swim 150 yards (using the front crawl breaststroke or a combination of both) maintain position at the surface of the water for 2 minutes by treading water using only the legs then swim 50 yards using the front crawl breaststroke or a combination of both. 3. Complete a timed event within 1 minute 40 seconds by starting in the water swimming 20 yards surface dive (feet-first or head-first) to a depth of 7 to 12 feet to retrieve a 10-pound object return to the surface and swim 20 yards on the back to return to the starting point holding the object at the surface with both hand exit the water without using a ladder or steps.
